Gatekeepers were the one dimming our shine – KOD of Echo

Former Echo member, KOD, holds Gatekeepers responsible for restricting Ghana’s music industry over the years.

In an interview with Caleb Nii Boye, Kwame Owusu Danso spoke about the influence that gatekeeping has had over Ghana’s music industry.

He recounted how the industry was when he stepped into the music scene, and spoke about how Gatekeepers then and even now can be responsible for stopping some acts from getting bigger.

“The gate keepers, the ones who were supposed to push us up the ladder were the ones who were dimming our shine.” He told Caleb during the interview. “When I hear people speak about the fact that we should allow the young ones to explore and also support them, I laugh in my head. You people were the ones who spoilt the industry”, he said during the interview.

He did point out how that influence has changed since his time in the scene.

During his conversation with Caleb he mentioned gatekeeping still functions in the industry but how a slight  difference has allowed newer acts to shine.

He said: “It’s still the same but it’s very subtle. Lately you’ll find that some people are trying to block a few people. However the picture is put out that we give opportunities to all the other people to shine.”
