Don’t Collect Money on behalf of Unregistered Musician’s – Nii Ayi Tagoe says to GHAMRO

The DJ/Banker has bemoaned the Ghana Music Rights Organization’s process for collecting Royalties.

GHAMRO is the agency responsible for the rights of Music Copyright owners in Ghana. And as part of their duties they collect Royalties for musicians with copyright patents whose songs are played for public use.

The agency has come under criticisms for a lack of transparency and their process of collecting Royalties in recent times.

During his interview with Caleb Nii Boye on 3FM’s Showbiz 927 Nii Ayi Tagoe spoke about the agency’s refusal to pay Unregistered Musicians whose Royalties they have gone ahead to collect.

He touched on the subject of the collection of royalties fir musicians not registered with the agency, saying: “Collect the moneys (Royalties) for only your members because it makes no sense to collect somebody’s royalties because their music is being played and tell the person that because they are not a (GHAMRO) member I won’t pay you”

During the interview Caleb also brought up the fact that it was stated that Sarkodie has Royalties with GHAMRO.  He pointed out that the artist will allegedly not be given his Royalties since he is not a registered member of GHAMRO.

In response Nii Ayi argued for the unfairness of the statement, saying: “I think it’s not fair for such a statement to be made. It’s like me being a tax payer and the road to infront of my house is horrible. But just because I am not a member of your organization doesn’t mean you should not pay me my money (for the road) when you have gone ahead to collect it on my behalf. Who sent you!?!?

He further pointed out how unsound the process is at the moment, stating that: “you are collecting something on behalf of all musicians. It wasn’t all musicians that came to you. So if you have gone on my behalf to do so, just reach out to me and tell me to take my money and let me go. Don’t Collect Money in musicians behalf.”
